On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Friday, President Iliana Iotova talked with the Board of Peace’s High Representative for Gaza, Nickolay Mladenov. "Mr Mladenov assured me that there will be greater clarity on the functioning of the Board of Peace at the Washington meeting on February 19," she told Bulgarian journalists.
Iotova said that it is hard for her to say at what level Bulgaria will be represented at the Board's very first meeting in Washington. "I will not attend, because on that date I have to issue decrees on a caretaker government and schedule parliamentary elections," she specified.
The Board of Peace was established by US President Donald Trump in Davos on January 22. Bulgaria, represented by outgoing Prime Minister Nikolay Zhelyazkov, joined the Board on the same day by decision of the outgoing government, but a ratification by the Bulgarian National Assembly is still pending. Former Bulgarian foreign minister and former UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov was appointed Board of Peace's High Representative for Gaza on January 17.
