The Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) set the price of natural gas for February at EUR 32.30 per MWh, excluding access, transmission, excise duty and VAT. At this price, state-owned supplier Bulgargaz will sell natural gas to end suppliers and to companies licensed to generate and transmit thermal energy, the EWRC said on Friday.

The price is 3.69% higher than in January.

With this decision, the actual increase in the price charged by end suppliers for the majority of household consumers is limited to some 2%, the EWRC said.

The EWRC explained that its decision confirms its position that it will not allow a mixing of the regulated and free markets, which would lead to market distortions. For this reason, the Commission has for the first time adjusted the quantities requested by Bulgargaz, excluding part of the volumes submitted at the last moment under bilateral contracts which, according to the regulator, harm the interests of customers on the regulated market.

The EWRC justified the adjustment with its statutory powers to give priority protection to the regulated market and to create conditions for forming the lowest possible price for its consumers.

In this regard, and in view of the objectives of the Energy Act, the EWRC is launching a procedure to amend the secondary legislation governing natural gas price regulation.

Despite the increase, the EWRC said that the approved price of EUR 32.30 per MWh is nearly 25% lower than in February 2025 and about 12% lower than in February 2024.
