site.btaSvishtov Commemorates 170th Anniversary of Founding of First Bulgarian Chitalishte Community Centre
The 170th anniversary of the founding of the first Bulgarian chitalishte community centre was commemorated with the laying of wreaths and flowers in front of the memorial plaque placed on the house of Dimitar Nachovich in Svishtov, where the community centre was founded on January 30, 1856.
The event was attended by community centre activists, representatives of cultural institutions, the municipal leadership and residents of Svishtov. The anniversary was marked in the presence of BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and the editor-in-chief of LIK magazine, Assoc. Prof. Georgi Lozanov. The new issue of LIK, the BTA magazine for literature, culture and art, is dedicated to the chitalishte community centers.
"Only two institutions in Bulgaria are older than community centres, these are churches and schools. Community centres are part not just of history, but of our national memory," said Plamen Alexandrov, chair of the Svishtov Community Centre.
