Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said Friday that investments in security, defence, and modern technologies are meaningful only if accompanied by inspiration, dedication, and commitment to the military profession. He spoke on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the Serbo-Bulgarian War at a ceremonial military parade at Saedinenie Square in Slivnitsa.

Zhelyazkov said that it is the responsibility of the government to build the authority of the Bulgarian soldier and to make the military profession attractive, as the main goal remains the defence of the homeland.

He recalled that the Serbo-Bulgarian War in 1885 took place only seven years after Bulgaria’s Liberation, at a time when the country was divided into two, and the Bulgarian people were fighting for Unification. The Prime Minister said that Bulgaria was attacked treacherously, with the support of some of the Great Powers, who did not want Bulgaria to be united and strong.

“Although we did not conquer new territories, since this was a defensive war, a war to protect the foundations of our united homeland, the Bulgarian army and people, led at the time by their commanders and Commander-in-Chief Prince Alexander, who was only 27 years old, and Minister of War Nikiforov, who was 29, made the Unification an indisputable fact,” the Prime Minister said.

This reflects the spirit of the Bulgarian people, who today commemorate 140 years since this glorious epic, the epic of victory here, which has become a symbol of heroism: the heroism of the Bulgarian Army, the dedication and inspiration of Bulgarian soldiers, and the values we most need today: faith, patriotism, confidence, and above all, pride, Zhelyazkov said.
