BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, Sofia University Rector Georgi Valchev and journalist Boyko Vassilev laid flowers at the monument to Stoil Voyvoda in his native village, which bears his name, on Thursday. The tribute paid to the monument was part of the programme of a conference dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising held at the BTA National Press Club in Sliven on the same day.
Stoil Voyvoda was among the active participants in the preparation and outbreak of the April Uprising. Together with Georgi Obretenov, he was one of the assistants of Ilarion Dragostinov, revolutionary leader of the Sliven revolutionary district. Stoil Voyvoda played an important role in the organization of the insurgent forces in the Sliven region.
BTA's series of conferences are part of a joint initiative with Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), called “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe”, aiming to commemorate anniversaries in Bulgarian history that are significant for European history through to 2032, when 1,400 years will be marked since the establishment of the first Bulgarian state in Europe - Old Great Bulgaria.
