Lyubomir Minchev has been named the new head coach of Bulgaria’s men’s national basketball team, following a decision by the Bulgarian Basketball Federation’s Board of Directors on Tuesday. The news was confirmed to BTA by federation president Georgi Glushkov.
“Lyubomir Minchev was chosen as national coach at today’s board meeting,” Glushkov said. “It was my proposal, based on several factors – the upcoming qualifiers, his familiarity with the players, and the fact that they know him well. These were decisive in my recommendation.”
Minchev’s contract is expected to cover the upcoming qualification cycle. This marks his second spell in charge of the national team, having previously led Bulgaria between 2016 and 2019. The experienced coach has also guided Bulgaria’s U18 and U20 teams and served as an assistant during EuroBasket 2009 and 2011.
Bulgaria will next compete in the EuroBasket 2029 pre-qualifiers, with their first game scheduled for November 27 against Armenia at Arena Botevgrad. The team is drawn in Group B alongside Armenia and Norway.
