The price of basic food products this week was BGN 101, up by BGN 7 year on year, Vladimir Ivanov, Chair of the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets (CEWMSC), told a news briefing here on Monday. He clarified that cherries were no longer present in the consumer basket, and their higher price was raising the basket's value.
He presented data on the wholesale price of basic food products over the past week, nothing a downward trend in the prices of flour, cheese, fresh milk, and butter, and the stable prices of cooking oil and eggs. Bulgaria has an absolutely stable egg market, he commented.
A downward trend in wholesale prices has also been observed in pork and poultry.
When it comes to vegetables, tomatoes appreciated slightly in the past week. Compared to this time last year, cucumbers and red peppers depreciated by 31% and 1%, respectively, while potatoes appreciated by 5%. The supply of cucumbers, carrots, and green peppers is stable, Ivanov commented. The wholesale price of lemons has been on a stable upward trend, and he expects that to continue.
On fruit, Ivanov commented that strawberries and apples appreciated by 12% and 56%, respectively, compared to this time last year. The prices of peaches and watermelons have been on a downward trend.
According to the CEWMSC Chair, some imported fruits have appreciated because of the bad harvest. Fruit prices are much higher than back in 2024, making 2025 the year of expensive fruit.
