The 1st International Black Sea Theatre Festival will take place under the motto Theatre is Excited in Varna from September 24 to 28, the organizers from the Varna Theatre and Music Production Centre said on Monday.

The concept of the festival includes the idea of a creative exchange of strong contemporary messages, recreated with modern means of expression, adequate to the criteria for high quality in 21st century art, the theatre production team noted. The festival will open with the premiere production of the Varna Drama Theatre called Alma Mahler, which is being prepared in collaboration with artists from the Republic of North Macedonia. The playwright is Sasho Dimovski, and the director's reading is by Dejan Projkovski. The play is inspired by the wife of composer Gustav Mahler, who wrote many musical works and is one of the most famous muses of the 20th century.

The National Hungarian Theatre in Cluj-Napoca will participate in the festival with the production I Am the Wind by John Foss. It is directed by Gabor Tompa, who last season staged Shakespeare's As You Like It in Varna.

The Italian association Aria Teatro is also coming to Varna with the original play After the Rain by Aida Taliente and Chiara Benedetti. The play is about the closeness between two sisters and the existential emptiness that one has to live with after the death of the other.

The same topic, but in a socio-political context, is addressed in Empty City by Dejan Dukovski from the Republic of Macedonia, staged by Ahmet Ismail from the Yalta Art Room Sofia. The play examines the last few hours of the lives of two brothers with painful self-irony.

The Nikolay Binev Youth Theatre from Sofia will participate in the festival with Yana Titova's play Lisbon based on Zahari Karabashliev, as will the troupe of the Nikolay Vaptsarov Drama Theatre from Blagoevgrad with Marriage by Gogol, staged by Rostislav Georgiev.

The festival programme will close with the play Art by Yasmina Reza, staged by Zhivko Guscherov.

An exhibition entitled 100 Years of Georgi Partsalev will accompany the festival, with photographs by actor Simeon Lyutakov. Theatre Director Prof. Plamen Markov will hold an acting workshop with young talents during the festival.
