At a ceremony here on Monday, President Rumen Radev presented tennis players Ivan Ivanov and Alexander Vasilev with honorary plaques. In his speech, the head of State said that the current year is full of remarkable achievements of our young hopes in sport.
On July 13, the 16-year-old Ivanov became the second-ever representative of Bulgaria to win the Wimbledon Junior Championships, after Grigor Dimitrov in 2008. Vasilev became the second Bulgarian tennis player to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon and also played in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros.
In his address, President Radev listed Bulgarian athletes' achievements this year in snowboarding, skiing, and volleyball. "Soon came the other great joy and reason for pride, because tennis remains one of the most loved and popular sports, which millions of young people around the world are engaged in. So your achievement of topping the world rankings is a remarkable success. It is a testament not only to your undoubted qualities, will, talent and dedication. I find it also an expression of the strong and indomitable Bulgarian spirit and will to win," Radev told the two tennis players.
"I am convinced that with young people like you, Bulgaria has a future and will stand proudly on the world stage," the head of State added. "History shows that every youngster who reaches such a stage in one of the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world soon becomes a star among men. I believe that the world stars in men's tennis are already looking up to your achievements and await you with respect in the men's tour," the President told Ivanov and Vasilev.
Earlier on Monday, the two tennis players also received awards from Youth and Sports Minister Ivan Peshev for their outstanding achievements.
