In the first quarter of 2025, the EU seasonally adjusted current account of the balance of payments recorded a surplus of EUR 114 billion or 2.5% of GDP, compared to a surplus of EUR 88.9 billion or 2% of GDP in the previous quarter and compared to a surplus of EUR 132.3 billion or 3% of GDP in the first quarter of 2024, according to estimates released by Eurostat on Thursday. Based on seasonally unadjusted data for Bulgaria, Eurostat reports a surplus of EUR 1.5 billion for the January-March period in 2025 compared to EUR 300 million for the same period in 2024 and EUR 1.8 billion compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.

The largest surpluses were registered in Germany at EUR 74.6 billion, followed by the Netherlands at EUR 28.2 billion, Sweden at EUR 10.6 billion, Denmark at EUR 8.3 billion, Spain at EUR 7.6 billion, and Ireland at EUR 6.6 billion.

The largest deficits were recorded in Romania at minus EUR 6.9 billion, Greece at minus EUR 4.5 billion, and Croatia minus EUR 3.9 billion.

In the first quarter of 2025 compared with the fourth quarter of 2024, based on seasonally adjusted data, the surplus of the goods account increased to EUR 117.9 billion compared to EUR 85.5 billion. The surplus of the services account increased to EUR 46.1 billion compared to EUR 42.1 billion.
