The wholesale prices of some staple foods in Bulgaria rose in the week ending on December 12, according to the bulletin of the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets.

The wholesale food market index increased by 1.11% over the week in review, from 2.338 points to 2.364 points. The base level of 1.000 point was set in 2005.

The average wholesale price of yellow cheese of the Vitosha type grew by 0.93% in a week, reaching BGN 18.32 per kilogramme. The price of white brined cheese from cow's milk fell by 0.14% to BGN 11.82/kg.

Yogurt (with fat content of 3% and over) went up by 2.19% to BGN 1.40 for a cup of 400 grammes, and fresh milk appreciated by 3.54% to BGN 2.40 per litre. Butter from cow's milk rose by 0.98% to BGN 3.08 for a packet of 125 g.

The average wholesale price of frozen chicken increased by 3.51% to BGN 7.02/kg. Eggs (size M) went up by 1.42% to BGN 0.43 per piece.

The price of lentils grew by 2.43% to BGN 4.30/kg. Price falls were reported for rice (-0.06% to BGN 3.33/kg) and dry common beans (-0.41% to BGN 4.33/kg). Flour (type 500) went up by 4.28% to BGN 1.56/kg. Sunflower oil appreciated by 0.80% to BGN 3.29/litre. Sugar rose by 4.74% to BGN 1.90/kg.

Among vegetables, the highest weekly increases were reported for cucumbers (+15.83% to BGN 4.20/kg) and red and green peppers, rising by 12.44% and 12.11%, respectively, to reach BGN 2.73/kg and BGN 2.50/kg. The average wholesale price of tomatoes grew by 7.47% to BGN 3.02/kg.

Prices fell most notably for cabbage (-11.16% to BGN 0.78/kg) and potatoes (-11.34% to BGN 0.86/kg). Carrots went down by 2.55% to BGN 1.07/kg. The average wholesale price of courgettes fell by 4.36% to BGN 2.37/kg. Onion went down by 5.29% to BGN 0.86/kg.

The price of lemons decreased by 7.30% to BGN 3.15/kg, bananas fell by 3.75% to BGN 2.67/kg, and oranges went down by 2.53% to BGN 2.31/kg. The price of apples increased by 6.26% to BGN 2.14/kg, and grapes went up by 2.10% to BGN 3.02/kg.
