The Malyovitsa Resort in the Rila Mountain is the first ski resort in Bulgaria to operate entirely on green energy. The complex will use eco-friendly pellets for heating, implement separate waste collection and introduce an environmental code, the resort management said at the official opening of the 2025/2026 winter season on Sunday.

Malyovitsa Resort Manager Alexandra Kovachka said the goal is to develop the resort sustainably, preserving the natural environment while making it more accessible. She noted that 2025 has been a year of concrete changes, resulting from the work of the resort team, collaboration with the Bulgarian Tourist Union and support from local authorities. Kovachka highlighted this year's achievements and confirmed that further investments are planned to enhance Malyovitsa's attractiveness.

Samokov Mayor Angel Dzhorgov described Malyovitsa as a personal favourite and one of the most beautiful peaks in Europe, wishing for a snowy season.

Bulgarian Tourist Union Chairman Ventsislav Venev called Malyovitsa a landmark for Bulgarian tourism, mountaineering and skiing, and noted its importance in introducing people to the country's natural beauty and in nurturing athletes.

The opening event featured folk dances, a fire show and free snow tubing for children on one of the slopes. Among the attendees were MPs, municipal councillors, Samokov Hospital Director Krasimira Kovachka and Bulgarian National Radio Director General Milen Mitev.

The resort reported increased tourist numbers during the summer season, with hotels operating at full capacity. Visitors are primarily families with children. The three hotels in the complex offer a total of 85 rooms. The renovated Alen Mak Hotel has been reopened, and the Alpinist Hotel now features a new relaxation centre with a heated pool.
