Bulgarian Winter Olympic bronze medalist Tervel Zamfirov was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Parallel Slalom at the Alpine Snowboard World Cup in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic.

Zamfirov lost his quarterfinal heat to World Cup leader and eventual winner Maurizio Bormolini of Italy, finishing 0.72 seconds behind, and placed eighth overall. Bormolini claimed victory in the Parallel Slalom by defeating Japan’s Ryusuke Shinohara in the big final.

In the round of 16, Zamfirov initially finished behind Italian Daniele Bagozza, who had posted the fastest qualifying time, but after Bagozza was disqualified, the Bulgarian advanced to the quarterfinals.

Radoslav Yankov ended his run in the round of 16 after trailing Austrian Andreas Promegger by 0.27 seconds in their head-to-head heat, finishing 13th overall. In the qualification round, Yankov had posted 12th-best time, while Zamfirov was 16th.

The third Bulgarian competitor, Alexander Krashniak, did not advance past the qualifiers, failing to complete his second run on the blue course, and ultimately finished 31st.

In the women’s event, Bulgaria was unrepresented, as Malena Zamfirova suffered a serious injury on the slopes earlier this week at Spindleruv Mlyn. In support of the 16-year-old Zamfirova, some competitors wore face stripes in line with the young Bulgarian’s tradition.

Japan’s Tsubaki Miki won the women’s title, defeating Czech Zuzana Maderova in the big final. Miki leads the women’s standings with 909 points.

Maurizio Bormolini leads the men’s overall World Cup rankings with 820 points and tops the discipline standings in Parallel Slalom with 232 points. Radoslav Yankov is 11th with 332 points, while Tervel Zamfirov is 13th with 316 points.

In the Parallel Slalom discipline rankings, Alexander Krashniak is sixth with 106 points, Zamfirov is 11th with 70 points, and Yankov is 19th with 45 points.

Two World Cup rounds remain in the Alpine Snowboard season.
