Bulgaria has extensive experience in exchanging good practices related to food products, said Italian Ambassador Marcello Apicella during a specialized seminar on "Designations of Origin and Protection of Food Products", a comparison between Bulgaria and Italy, organized by the Italian Chamber of Commerce, the Association of Meat Processors in Bulgaria and the Union of Fruit and Vegetable Processors.
The seminar addresses key topics related to designations of origin and protection of food, including geographical indications, designations of origin and products of traditional specific character.
The Ambassador pointed out that last year Italy supplied Bulgaria with food industry machinery worth over EUR 30 million, and Bulgaria exported packaging machinery to Italy worth over EUR 29 million.
Marcello Apicella noted that Italy is the country with the most protected geographical indications and protected designations of origin, which are recognized in the European Union, especially in wines, cheeses, local products. He pointed out that these are food products that respect traditional aging methods, and noted that quality products are not produced from cheap ingredients thanks to protected designations of origin.
The President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, Alessandro Geretto, pointed out that Italy and Bulgaria share great wealth in the food sector, because they are not only goods, but also culture, identity and sustainability.
Bulgaria and Italy have a rich tradition in this area of local flavours with quality, and this this quality must be protected, he pointed out.
