The total volume of lev banknotes and coins in circulation is BGN 7.7 billion as of January 30, 2026, one day before the end of the dual circulation period of the lev and the euro in Bulgaria according to an announcement by the Bulgarian National Bank. The bank adds that this represents around 75% of the cash in circulation in leva at the beginning of 2025.

The central bank states that euro banknotes and coins totalling over EUR 6.1 billion are currently in circulation, ensuring the normal functioning of the payment system and meeting the needs of the economy and population.

The BNB reminds that the dual circulation period for the lev and the euro ends on January 31, 2026, after which the euro will be the only legal tender in Bulgaria from February 1, 2026.

The bank also informs that the process of exchanging lev banknotes and coins for euros is being carried out in accordance with the current regulatory framework and the adopted operational plans. Credit institutions are being supplied with euro banknotes and coins in accordance with the approved schedules and procedures.
