site.btaEU Tourism Reports Record-Setting Year in 2025, Bulgaria Exceeds Average on Tourism Nights
Last year was another record-setting year for EU tourism, with nearly 3.1 billion nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments across the EU, according to Eurostat data for 2025, published here on Wednesday.
This reflects a 2.2% increase, or 66.4 million more nights than the previous year, while the increase for Bulgaria exceeds the EU average.
Nights spent by international guests increased by 3.4% (49.7 million), while nights spent by domestic guests increased by 1.1% (16.7 million). Most overnight stays, 61.7% of the EU total, took place in 4 EU countries: Spain (513.6 million), Italy (476.9 million), France (471.7 million) and Germany (442.1 million). In contrast, the countries with the lowest figures for tourism nights were Luxembourg (3.6 million), Latvia (5.0 million) and Estonia (6.7 million).
In 2025, the number of tourism nights increased in 24 of the 27 EU countries, compared to 2024. The largest increases were in Malta (10.1%) and Poland (7.2%). In contrast, decreases were recorded in Luxembourg (2.4%), Romania (1.7%) and Ireland (0.4%).
Bulgaria ranks ninth in terms of tourism nights increase in the EU, with the total number of nights spent up by 4%, compared to the previous year, Eurostat data show. An increase was reported in almost every month with the summer season and the last quarter of the year being the highest.
