Unit 6 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant is scheduled to be shut down on December 22 due to a malfunction in the protective membrane device of the turbine steam superheater separator, the plant's press centre said on Friday. The fault occurred while the unit was in operation.

Unit 6 was shut down on December 15 to replace an identical safety device.

Kozloduy NPP said it has spare protective devices available, which will undergo independent external inspections and testing before installation. All repair work will be carried out in line with technical maintenance requirements and quality standards.

The steam released into the atmosphere consists of purified water from the turbine steam superheater separator, located in the conventional, non-nuclear part of the unit. No pollutants are being released into the environment.

Once the necessary repairs are completed, Unit 6 will be reconnected to the national power grid. Unit 5 continues to operate according to schedule, Kozloduy NPP added.

Earlier this week, Unit 6 was briefly reconnected to the power system after a precautionary shutdown to replace a faulty safety device, Kozloduy NPP said at the time.
