site.btaTraffic Halted at Kulata Border Crossing Due to Greek Farmers’ Protest
Traffic on the Bulgarian side of the Kulata-Promachonas border control checkpoint between Bulgaria and Greece has been suspended, the BTA correspondent in the region reported on Wednesday.
There is a heightened police presence in the area. A queue of cars and heavy trucks is forming.
A truck driver told BTA that he spoke with police officers who explained to him that crossing the border is currently impossible due to the protest by Greek farmers.
Earlier, Greek media reported that the protest by Greek agricultural producers and livestock farmers is expanding with new road blockades reinforced by tractors and other types of farming equipment. According to Greece’s public broadcaster ERT, in the Thessaly region more than 4,000 agricultural machines have already been positioned along the roads, and from today a new road blockade is in place near the city of Trikala.
Several major roads remain blocked, including the Thessaloniki–Athens motorway near Malgara and Larissa, the E65 highway near Karditsa, the Egnatia motorway near Komotini, among others. Authorities have arranged alternative detour routes in these areas.
Protesting farmers from Serres, Northern Greece, announced their intention to block the Promachonas border crossing (opposite Bulgaria’s Kulata) at midday on Wednesday.
