In the first 24 hours of operation of the Safe City project, some 110,000 traffic violations were registered on the streets of North Macedonia’s capital and parts of the roads around Skopje, as well as in Tetovo and Kumanovo. The system, which launched on Monday, uses cameras to detect offences such as speeding, running red lights, and illegal parking.

According to North Macedonia’s Interior Minister Pance Toskovski, the country recorded 142 road fatalities in 2024. While Scandinavian countries average 20 road deaths per million inhabitants and Europe averages 44, North Macedonia has recorded an average of 78 fatalities per million inhabitants over the past 15 years.

Initial information indicates that December, and likely January, will serve as a testing period, during which offenders will receive notifications of their violations. Fines will begin to be issued in February. If a fine is paid within eight days, the amount will be reduced by half. Payments will be electronic, and the Interior Ministry will receive immediate confirmation.

During the trial phase, the system will track speeding, red-light violations, and unregistered vehicles. The range of offences will be expanded in the next phase.

The testing period covers the cities of Skopje, Tetovo, and Kumanovo, as well as sections of Corridors 8 and 10, which will be integrated into the violation-recording system in December. The project will eventually be implemented nationwide.
