International Dog Day will be celebrated with various initiatives in Sofia. Dog owners and experts will talk about the relationship between humans and their most loyal pets.

In the Departures Hall of Terminal 2 at Sofia's Vasil Levski Airport, therapy dog Smiley will welcome passengers of all ages. His handler, Antonia Rikova, will share useful information about responsible travel with pets, said the organizers from the airport and the Four Paws Foundation. Information about the Animals Help People project and the mission of therapy dogs will also be presented. Activities for children are also planned.

The Children's Department of the Sofia City Library is organizing Slipper Day to celebrate the holiday of dogs. "Come in your slippers, crocs, and all other possible varieties to celebrate World Dog Day together. We look forward to seeing your four-legged friends! Let's have fun together! Woof!" said the Children's Department of the Sofia City Library on its Facebook page. The initiative will take place throughout the day.

Various shops in Sofia will also host events dedicated to dogs. One of the capital's bakeries will be collecting donations for dogs at the clinic in Vrabnitsa, run by the Ecoravnovesie Municipal Enterprise. There will be a treat for every dog that comes with its owner to support the cause.

There will also be a themed event at one of the jewelry chain stores. There will be a special corner for photos with pets, discounts on purchases, and part of the daily proceeds from sales at one of the stores will be donated to the Pet Sisters Foundation, which rescues and cares for homeless animals.

Bulgaria celebrates International Dog Day on August 26, although there are several similar dates during the year and different countries celebrate it on different days, the Four Paws Foundation told BTA.
