A Wheat and Bread Festival is taking place in Byala, Ruse region, Byala Mayor Dimitar Slavov told BTA on Saturday.

An afternoon folklore programme featuring songs, dances, and a demonstration of harvest customs is scheduled on an open stage by the Kolyu Ficheto Bridge.

The event includes a culinary exhibition of handmade baked goods prepared by members of local community centres and pensioners’ clubs, presenting traditional recipes from the region. Among the special guests is Baba Deshka, who has participated in a popular television reality format, bringing added interest to the festivities. Organisers have arranged for the breaking of Byala’s signature giant coiled banitsa—one of the festival’s main highlights.

“The idea is for it to be about four metres in diameter. This way, more than 1,000 people will be able to sample it,” Slavov explains.

Slavov also recalls that at the first edition of the festival in 2023, Byala residents set a Balkan record for the largest banitsa, which measured 358 cm in diameter and weighed 185 kg.
