site.btaFollowing Christo: A Bulgarian-Romanian Couple’s Journey Through Art

Julia and Marian Bahovski, a Romanian-Bulgarian couple united by love and a shared passion for the art of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, have followed the late artist’s work across Europe. Speaking at the launch of the June issue of LIK magazine dedicated to Christo and Jeanne-Claude, at the BTA Press Club in Bucharest, they shared vivid memories, photos, and mementos from their travels to Italy, the UK, and France.
The LIK launch event was held simultaneously at the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Centre in Gabrovo and BTA national press clubs across Bulgaria and abroad.
Julia remembers how her love for Christo - and Bulgaria - began when Marian first told her about the artist’s genius and his partnership with Jeanne-Claude. The couple later visited three of Christo’s final installations: The Floating Piers on Italy’s Lake Iseo, The London Mastaba, and the Wrapped Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
The most powerful experience, she says, was in Italy: seeing thousands of people walking “on water” and witnessing a nation celebrating a Bulgarian artist moved her deeply. “There wasn’t a newspaper without a feature on Christo,” she remembers, “and everywhere, it was written: from Bulgaria.”
In Paris, they stayed near the Arc de Triomphe and observed the artwork at all hours. Julia recalls the emotional moment when Bulgarian volunteers handed out pieces of the wrapping fabric and said, “You’re from the country of this genius.” Marian keeps one of those fabric pieces as a treasured souvenir.
Inspired by Christo’s work, Marian even created a model of the artist’s first wrapped object - a Volkswagen Beetle - and now dreams of holding a photo exhibition showcasing their journey, first in Romania and possibly in Bulgaria as well. He envisions some of the prints being displayed outdoors, echoing the public nature of Christo’s art.
