Olya Bozhekova, a fourth-year Slavic Studies student at Sofia University, has won first place at an International Ukrainian Orthography Competition in Poland, the university’s press centre said on Monday.

The competition was hosted by Jagiellonian University in Krakow for the ninth consecutive year. According to the competition rules, each university can participate with up to three students. Eligible to participate are only students who have studied Ukrainian as a foreign language.

Sofia University has always been represented in the competition, but it has never won first place. This year’s winner, Olya Bozhekova, came in eighth in 2023.

The 9th International Ukrainian Orthography Competition was attended by 53 students from 16 countries: Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Germany, Italy, Poland, Serbia, Turkiye, Ukraine, and the US.

Olya Bozhekova will be awarded at a ceremony in May, when the Chair of the Jury, Prof. Dr. Oksana Baranivska, will be a guest lecturer in Sofia under the Erasmus+ programme.
