site.btaExpert: National Symbols Give Bulgarian Euro Coins a Distinct Identity
When it comes to a national currency, people are very sensitive, which is why the national symbols on euro coins help give them a distinct national identity, said Dr. Julia Zaharieva, founder and dean of the European Union Law programme at the Sofia University Faculty of Law. She was speaking during a presentation of the latest issue of BTA's LIK magazine, titled "Bulgarian Money". The event took place in the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) headquarters in Sofia on Tuesday.
In the new LIK issue, Dr. Julia Zaharieva contributed a piece focusing on the informational value of the euro coin itself.
She expressed hope that when Bulgarian euro coins begin circulating outside the country, the national side of the coins could spark interest in the history behind the coin designs.
Dr. Zaharieva also said she was outraged by how Bulgarians’ fears regarding the euro introduction have been taken advantage of.
She explained that European banknotes feature seven architectural styles from across Europe, while euro coins all have a national side.
"This decision to include a national presence on the coin itself is driven by the fact that when it comes to a national currency, sensitivity is very high. And they found this solution: yes, it is a euro coin, but it will also have its own national character in some way," she said.
Dr. Zaharieva said that the designer of the eagle depicted on the national side of the German euro coins was Bulgarian artist Snezhana Ruseva.
