Bulgaria has every reason to be proud of its achievements when it comes to women’s participation in science, emerging startups, and the field of information technology, Diana Miteva, Chair of the Board of the Bulgarian Ladies Forum said at a round table discussion titled Women in Innovation, held in Sofia on Thursday. “Talent in Bulgaria has no gender,” Miteva added. Ekaterina Zaharieva, European Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation, is a special guest at the event.
“According to the latest data from the European Commission, 49% of engineers and scientists in Bulgaria are women, and in academia that share reaches 55%,” Miteva said. “By this indicator, Bulgaria ranks among the absolute leaders in the EU, women scientists here don’t just participate in research, they drive science forward.”
In the technology sector, women make up 27% of IT professionals in Bulgaria, according to data cited by Miteva, placing the country third in the European Union. “This proves that in Bulgaria, talent knows no gender,” she added.
Regarding gender balance in entrepreneurship, Miteva said that more and more women are choosing to become entrepreneurs. She cited data from the Sofia Municipal Privatization and Investment Agency, which show that 25% of newly established companies in Bulgaria are founded or co-founded by women, a figure above the EU average.
“We are proud that Bulgaria has a higher share of women entrepreneurs than the European average, because they have the courage to do it,” Miteva said.
