The Bulgarian Socialist Party’s (BSP) National Council has confirmed that the party’s 51st Congress will be held on February 7 and 8, the party’s press service said after its meeting on Saturday.

“With an overwhelming majority, the National Council reaffirmed its decision,” said Gabriel Valkov, Chair of BSP’s Youth Organization, speaking to reporters after the meeting.

Valkov said that the party leadership had proposed changing the date. He said that the proposal came from [BSP Chair] Atanas Zafirov, who has not resigned and wishes to remain party leader, but that the majority decided the party should proceed with the Congress and a change of leadership. According to Valkov, the Congress will determine Zafirov’s political future in the party.

At the meeting, the National Council also approved an organizational plan for the Congress and adopted a draft political platform for participation in the upcoming snap parliamentary elections, which is to be endorsed by the Congress, the party further said in its press release.
