The Council of Ministers has approved a draft decision establishing a National Mechanism for Coordination and Control of the proper implementation of the Schengen acquis in the Republic of Bulgaria, the government’s press service said on Wednesday.
The new mechanism will provide continuous monitoring of the effective, efficient, and correct application of Schengen legislation in the country. The proposal outlines in detail the structure, composition, tasks, and operating procedures of the mechanism.
The National Mechanism will include senior political representatives from all institutions involved in the implementation of the Schengen legal framework.
Its main responsibilities will include addressing coordination issues, identifying follow-up measures in response to findings and recommendations from Schengen evaluation reports, and strengthening Bulgaria’s administrative capacity for full participation in Schengen cooperation.
The mechanism will be headed by a National Schengen Coordinator, a role to be performed by the Deputy Minister of the Interior responsible for EU affairs.
