BGN 2.6 million in public money will be invested in replacing the water mains in Breznik, in the southwestern Region of Pernik, Regional Development and Public Works Minister Ivan Ivanov said on Friday. Ivanov and Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov visited the town, which expects a solution to its water crisis as part of a bigger effort to address water shortages in various parts of Bulgaria.

Zafirov said many of Breznik’s water supply issues have been in place for years. “The people can’t wait, it is time for positive solutions,” he urged.

According to Ivanov, the settlements around Breznik are not affected by the water crisis. He said the main problem is that the amount of water in the Krasava Reservoir, the main water source for the municipality, has decreased drastically. Besides, high levels of manganese have been registered in this water body.

The manganese will be isolated in the coming days, the minister said. “The question is where to find an additional amount of water to halt the rationing,” he added. Deliberations are underway about possible new water sources and the cleaning of existing sources, Ivanov said.

Water in Breznik has been rationed since November 2024 by order of Mayor Vasil Uzunov.
