The European Union is ready to cooperate with the United States on implementing the Gaza peace plan, a European Commission (EC) spokesperson said at a news conference on Friday. "We are discussing with Washington how we can jointly achieve the goals regarding Gaza," the spokesperson added.

The EU believes there is still insufficient clarity over the objectives, governance, and compatibility with the UN Charter of the Board of Peace launched by US President Donald Trump, the spokesperson noted. Asked about the participation of two EU Member States in the initiative, he said each country decides for itself. "EU participation in the Board of Peace requires close coordination and unity in our contacts with the US," he added.

"We remain in close contact with our partners on this issue. It is particularly important for the EU that the UN remains at the heart of the international system. The UN Charter is the foundation of international law and common security," the spokesperson said.

"We share the goal of achieving peace and are doing everything we can to contribute," he noted. The spokesperson confirmed that EC President Ursula von der Leyen had received an invitation to join the Board of Peace and had expressed gratitude for it.
