Greek journalist and publisher Archimidis Kareklidis of the Greek newspaper Magnesia was assaulted outside his home in Volos by two masked assailants, Skai TV reported on Friday.
The attack took place on Thursday evening, minutes after the journalist parked his car near his home. The attackers, wearing hoods, knocked him to the ground and repeatedly struck him in the face and head before fleeing in an unknown direction. They remain unidentified, according to the report.
The online edition of Magnesia said in a statement that acts of violence and intimidation would not deter its work. It also published photographs of the journalist showing visible facial injuries.
Magnesia described the incident as an unprecedented case in the city’s history. The publication stated that this crime should prompt reflection and mobilize all institutions concerned with press freedom.
Law enforcement authorities are investigating the case.
