Heavy snowfall, ice storms, and a sharp drop in temperatures are expected in 24 southern and northeastern states of the US over the next few days, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Friday. A large number of airports are expected to be closed, leading to cancellations or significant delays for many flights.

Serious traffic disruptions in cities and on highways and major roads, power outages, and an increased risk of property damage are also likely. The Foreign Ministry advised Bulgarian citizens residing in or planning to travel to the affected states to up to date on the weather and road conditions through websites such as redcross.org and ready.gov. Checking the status of upcoming flights, including allowing extra time for airport transfers, is also recommended. Strictly following the instructions and recommendations of local authorities is extremely important.

According to unofficial data published on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, some 300,000 Bulgarians live and work in the US.
