GERB leader Boyko Borissov told reporters in Parliament on Wednesday that the fifth motion of no confidence submitted in the Rosen Zhelyazkov Cabinet can only be described as irresponsible. Borissov argued that the ruling majority has been unstable since the beginning, and drafting the state budget should not be threatened.
Borissov said: "Imagine that the Cabinet falls and we start to draw up a budget that should guarantee entry into the eurozone. How will the 3% deficit be covered? Did anyone think about that? If no majority is available to stabilize the government tomorrow, meaning that the vote does not pass, we can expect a terrible budget that will go up to 8% or 9%." He proceeded to slam Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB), who initiated the vote of no confidence, for having jumped on the "Russian bandwagon against the euro".
When asked about President Rumen Radev's intentions to alert the competent authorities about alleged violations and abuse at the VMZ ordnance plant in Sopot, Bulgaria's largest state-owned defence factory, Borissov stated that he could not comment, since his party has had no influence on the plant in the past five years. Borissov then compared Radev to a party leader and added that any attempt to prevent the deal with Rheinmetall would be aimed at scaring off investors.
Commenting on the Anti-Corruption Commission, Borissov said that it should not keep its current form, because "it was established during the assemblage [the ruling coalition of unwilling partners CC-DB and GERB, which fell apart before the agreed rotation of governance seats], for [former interior minister] Boyko Rashkov, and the goal was to have CC-DB take control of all services and commissions."
Asked whether GERB-UDF would negotiate with the opposition to fill the positions in the Supreme Judicial Council and the Inspectorate at the Supreme Judicial Council, Borissov said that is not an option after he "had enough of CC-DB's discussions on judicial reform". He added that negotiations with Vazrazhdane are also unlikely due to ideological differences.
