The Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria has submitted to the National Assembly observations on a consolidated Bill to Amend and Supplement the Judicial System Act that was passed on first reading on May 14, the prosecution service reported on its website on Wednesday.

The prosecutors express agreement in principle with the understanding stated in the reasons to the draft legislation about the need of urgent legislative measures to address the expired terms in office of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and the SJC Inspectorate and the ensuing legal uncertainty regarding the legitimacy of their decisions and the doubts that have arisen in the public about the existence of dependences and influences in the judicial system.

The prosecution service makes a positive assessment of the MPs' efforts towards overcoming the long-drawn institutional crisis in the judicial system. The prosecution service shares the opinion that tackling this crisis and building public trust in the judiciary is crucial for the functioning of the judicial system in accordance with the principle of the rule of law.
