An official ceremony marking the 148th anniversary of the Battle of Shipka Pass will be held at the foot of the Liberty Memorial on Shipka Peak on Saturday, organizers from the Gabrovo regional administration announced. The battle took place during the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), which resulted in Bulgaria gaining its freedom from the Ottoman Empire.
The day traditionally begins with hikes to the historic peak. After the official ceremony, flowers and wreaths will be laid, followed by a reenactment of the battle. An exhibition dedicated to the history of the Bulgarian national anthem will be presented in front of the Liberty Memorial.
The Gabrovo Regional Administration is organizing transportation for those who wish to attend the events.
Gabrovo Regional Governor Maria Basheva-Venkova said in an interview for BTA that the organizing team aims to create a comprehensive historical experience.
The national celebration of the battle is held under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria and is organized by the Gabrovo Regional Administration with the assistance of the Shipka-Buzludzha National Park Museum, Gabrovo Municipality, Rotary Club - Gabrovo, Regional History Museum Gabrovo, Aprilov-Palauzov Regional Library Gabrovo, Hristo Tsokev Art Gallery, and State Archives Gabrovo.
