On August 19, US President Donald Trump met with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington. The meeting was followed by expanded-format talks, attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Following the end of the meeting, Trump announced that preparations would begin for a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which would be followed by trilateral talks including himself, international news agencies reported.

Russian President Putin has agreed in a phone call with his American counterpart to take part in this upcoming meeting, which is expected to take place within the next two weeks, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced.
