Participants in the annual International Danube Regatta (TID) from eight countries arrived in the town of Vidin on Sunday, the municipality said. The group was welcomed near the Baba Vida Fortress by Vidin Mayor Tsvetan Tsenkov and Deputy Mayor Borislava Borisova.
Bulgaria is hosting the stage of the regatta between Novo Selo and Silistra. According to organizers, the participants reached Vidin after 11 days of rowing from Belgrade, traditionally making a stop at Novo Selo before continuing downstream.
Mayor Tsenkov emphasized the potential of reviving Danube tourism, highlighting opportunities for beaches, water sports and exploration of the river's sand islands.
This year, Bulgaria and Serbia mark 70 years of the TID regatta. They were the only two countries which continued hosting it even during the pandemic, said Stilian Bonev, the Bulgarian organizer of the event.
The participants will spend two days around the Baba Vida Fortress before heading on to Lom.
TID, which stands for Tour International Danubien, covers more than 2,500 km and began in late June in Ingolstadt, Germany.
