Police officers detained seven people in a car leaving Bulgaria at the Kulata border checkpoint as they failed to present proof of entry in the country, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

The driver of the car had dual citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian and was identified by the police. The officers, however, found no evidence that the seven passengers, who are foreign citizens, had entered Bulgaria.

The police specified that after Bulgaria's entry into Schengen, border officers do not have the right to carry out border checks on motor vehicles leaving Bulgaria.

Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case.
