site.btaBulgaria to Join Eurozone Smoothly and Confidently as of January 1, Says PM Zhelyazkov

As of January 1, 2026, Bulgaria will smoothly and confidently become part of the euro area, said Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov at a press conference on Tuesday. “If we assume that the main goal of any government is the prosperity of the nation, then our key task will be to ensure that Bulgarians in the euro area enjoy higher incomes, stronger purchasing power, and are protected against inflationary pressures,” Zhelyazkov stressed.
Earlier on Tuesday, the European Parliament (EP) voted to adopt a report on Bulgaria's adoption of the euro on January 1, 2026. Afterwards, Bulgaria cleared the last hurdle to its entry into the eurozone as the Council of the European Union (EU) adopted the three legislative acts required for this step.
Zhelyazkov noted that the next six months will be a period of gradual preparation of the systems for the euro, with particular emphasis on an information campaign aimed at ensuring a smooth currency transition for Bulgarian citizens.
The Prime Minister expressed special thanks to the EP, the European Commission, the Council of the EU, the European Council, and the European Central Bank for their principled and consistent support, which recognizes the efforts of the Bulgarian people since the country’s accession to the European Union.
Zhelyazkov said that since 1999, successive Bulgarian governments have followed a consistent policy aimed at the full and effective integration of Bulgaria into the EU and its structures.
According to him, in the coming months, a smooth technical transition will be carried out in preparation for working with the euro, alongside a broad public awareness campaign. “We must address all fears and debunk fake and manipulated news. Our task is to ensure that Bulgarians have access to clear information, that fears are overcome, and that there is a sense that all possible scenarios and risks have been carefully considered and will be addressed appropriately,” Zhelyazkov added.
The Prime Minister noted that Bulgaria is well prepared for the process and there is enough time to resolve any outstanding issues. “This opens up significant potential and marks a major leap forward for the Bulgarian economy,” he said.
Zhelyazkov also highlighted the strong parliamentary support the Government has received from its coalition partners. “I would like to thank the 171 responsible MPs who are backing this national cause,” he added.
