Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov unveiled a new scanner and mammograph at the Dr Asen Velev Hospital in Razlog, Southwestern Bulgaria, the Council of Ministers said in a press release on Monday. During the official ceremony, which was also attended by the Chair of the Committee on Health in the 51st National Assembly Kostadin Angelov, MPs, Razlog Mayor Krasimir Gerchev, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to the medical staff who make daily efforts to boost the health of the local people.
Commenting on the new equipment, Zhelyazkov said: "Today's addition would be nothing without the expertise that doctors and medical professionals have. Modern equipment is only effective when in the hands of trained and dedicated professionals."
The scanner and the mammograph are a step towards protecting the health of the people in the municipalities of Razlog, Bansko, Yakoruda, Belitsa, as well as the large tourist flow in the region. Computed tomography is a modern method that provides fast and accurate diagnosis through X-rays and computer processing. The artificial intelligence integrated in the new device facilitates the detection and tracking of structural changes in the body. The digital mammograph uses X-rays to image breast tissue and is essential for early diagnosis of breast cancer, especially in women over 40.
Zhelyazkov stated: "Sustainable solutions must be sought – solutions that enable the potential of our education system, which is among the leading in Europe in the field of medicine, to be developed. This is evidenced by the number of international students who study in Bulgaria and who are successful in countries such as the UK. There, specialists who graduated in Bulgaria are second among those entering the [healthcare] system."
The Prime Minister said that this potential should be developed not exclusively in the capital. He added that the medical profession should be made attractive at the regional level through dialogue with healthcare professionals and with anyone who has an active stance on the matter.
