A Bulgarian delegation is taking part in the 47th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, which opened in Milan on Tuesday. The delegation is comprised of Bulgarian Antarctic Institute (BAI) President Christo Pimpirev, BAI members Rositsa Yaneva and Dragomir Mateev, Silvia Rangelova of the Ministry of Environment and Water and Tsveti Romanska and Sasha Raicheva of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Pimpirev said.

Bulgaria was granted consultative status in the Antarctic Treaty System in 1998. It is one of 29 countries entitled to make decisions for the future of Antarctica.

The Committee for Environmental Protection, an advisory body to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings, held its 27th session in Milan on Monday.

The 47th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting will discuss environmental matters, international law issues, the coordination of logistic activities and scientific projects, and the growing tourist interest in the icy continent.

The bids of Canada and Belarus for consultative status will be put to the vote at a plenary.
