Police found nearly 27 kilograms of marijuana during a joint inspection of a car by customs and border guards at the Kalotina border crossing, Border Police said on Thursday. The driver, who is a Turkish citizen, and his companion, who is from Belgium, have been charged and detained for up to 72 hours.

Officers found 52 packages of marijuana when they checked a car entering the country at around 1:25 a.m. on June 18. During the check, officers noticed irregularities in the floor of the vehicle, as well as caches in the rear bumper and doors, and the driver and passenger in the car stated they had nothing to declare.

The case is under investigation by the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office.
