The government allocated BGN 9.5 million to Bulgarian Posts for preparation for the transition from BGN to EUR, Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadjov said at a briefing at the Council of Ministers on Wednesday.
Many Bulgarian citizens would need to exchange BGN for EUR as the country adopts the new currency, Karadjov said. He added that this required access to convenient places for BGN to EUR exchange, noting that post offices were accessible to all, especially older citizens.
Karadjov pointed out that Bulgarian Posts needed counting machines, devices for checking banknote authenticity, and other equipment, for which the necessary public procurements had already been carried out.
He said that the signing of contracts had been delayed until funding was provided, and although the funding was granted that day, the signing would be postponed until June 4, as a positive convergence report for Bulgaria was expected at that point.
