The Bulgarian authorities detained 18,554 third country nationals as illegal migrants in 2023, which was 10.7% more than in 2022. Those detained last year included 1,803 inbound travellers arrested at the Bulgarian border and 1,990 outbound unregistered persons, also at the border.
