A ceremony marking the 132nd anniversary of the Military Medical Academy's (MMA) establishment was held here on Friday.

“We have managed to make the MMA the most high-tech hospital in Bulgaria, to attract the best-trained personnel, and to train our own staff,” said MMA head Ventsislav Mutafchiiski during the ceremony.

“The future lies in even greater investments in the field of technology, because our claim and desire remains that MMA is a high-tech hospital. We focus on robotic surgery. We have enough funds and, despite the budget wrangling at the moment, we have allocated our budget from the revenues we can invest, and we will invest in new technologies and in upgrading the qualifications of our doctors and nurses,” Prof. Mutafchiiski explained.

“The MMA is home to the biggest names in Bulgarian and world medicine, and more and more of their fame goes beyond the borders of our homeland,” Vice President Iliana Iotova said during the ceremony, adding that there are patients who are sent to Bulgaria to be operated on at the MMA.

On the occasion of the 132nd anniversary of the Academy, wreaths were laid at the Doctors’ Memorial in Sofia.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Iliana Iotova, Prof. Mutafchiiski, Minister of Defence Todor Tagarev, Minister of Health Hristo Hinkov, Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov, and others.
