Nearly one in ten Bulgarian women report physical violence and threats, Social Minister Ivanka Shalapatova said on Thursday during a roundtable discussion on measures against domestic violence. The event was organized by the Animus Association Foundation in Sofia.
According to Shalapatova's Ministry, about 34% of Bulgarians identify as victims of violence, she said. In her words, zero social tolerance towards violence should be established. There is no formal justification for not helping a victim, she stressed.
Institutions must also provide quality care and those in charge must be adequately prepared, Shalapatova also noted.
She expressed concern over the account of a woman who during the discussion shared her story of aggression exhibited by her husband. I am extremely worried by what you shared, that you do not see adequate support in the face of the social system, Shalapatova said.
