European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has welcomed the design of Bulgaria’s 1 euro coin in a post on Facebook.

"Exciting news for Bulgaria and the euro area! Take a first look at the design for Bulgaria’s €1 coin," Lagarde wrote.

The design maintains continuity with Bulgaria’s current coins, and features symbols that are deeply rooted in the country’s heritage and cherished by its people, the ECB President noted.

"While we’ll have to wait a little longer to see these coins in circulation, this preview offers a glimpse of the beautiful national side chosen by Bulgarska narodna banka, Bulgaria’s national central bank," the post read.

The national side of the Bulgarian 1 euro coin includes an image of Ivan of Rila, the patron saint of Bulgaria and founder of the Rila Monastery. To the right of the image is the word Bulgaria written in Cyrillic, while to the left is the word Euro, also in Cyrillic, and the year of issuance.
