Joint teams of Bulgarian and Romanian police officers will monitor road traffic in Ruse and Giurgiu, two mirror cities on both sides of the Danube River, until September 19, Ruse Traffic Police Department Chief Inspector Nikolay Nenkov said on Wednesday.
In Bulgaria’s Ruse Region, the joint patrols will be deployed both in and around the city of Ruse—primarily near the Danube Bridge—and along the main roads.
The heightened control measures are in response to the heavy flow of Romanian vehicles either heading to Bulgarian seaside resorts or transiting the country en route to Turkiye and Greece, as well as those returning to Romania.
The focus of the checks will be on drivers displaying risky behaviour that poses a danger to other road users, such as improper overtaking and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Officers will also be checking for the use of seat belts by both drivers and passengers, the validity of driving and registration documents, possession of mandatory third-party liability insurance, and the technical condition of vehicles.
In cases where violations are identified, enforcement will be carried out by officers from the host country. Romanian police officers will assist in communicating with their fellow nationals and checking their required documents.
Similar operations will take place in the Giurgiu area in Romania.
