The conflict between Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev and his deputy Borislav Sarafov is a manifestation of all the processes that have been taking place in the judiciary for many years, Bulgarian Judges Association Chair Tatiana Zhilova told bTV on Saturday.
"We cannot say that we have a conflict between friends - we have a war between institutions," she added. According to Zhilova, the problems in the judiciary started in 2008-2009.
Zhilova expressed belief that the judiciary was not put on a solid footing from the very creation of the Constitution. "Thanks to the model that was set then, we have managed to build this over-powered prosecution office, which is part of the judiciary, but at the same time it has more powers and breaks the balance within the institution," said the Bulgarian Judges Association Chair.
"With this, we have managed to raise a judicial nomenclature in the face of the Supreme Judicial Council, the Inspectorate, many administrative heads, which does not help in any way to have healing processes, but at the same time tends to succumb to political pressure," Zhilova added.
In her words, the authority of the judiciary is not only undermined - it is destroyed.
