site.btaPatriarch Daniil Officiates Memorial Service for April Uprising's Victims
On the occasion of 150 years since the April Uprising, Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil on Monday officiated a memorial service for the victims - priests and laypeople - at Sofia's St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral. The service was attended by President Iliana Iotova, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) President Evelina Slavcheva, Bulgarian National Radio Director General Milen Mitev, representatives of political parties, the academic community, and public figures.
Afterwards, Patriarch Daniil and President Iotova led a procession to the BAS building for a national commemorative assembly on 150 years since the April Uprising's outbreak. The event is held under the President's auspices.
Approached by journalists, the Bulgarian Patriarch said that the April Uprising, in addition to its unparalleled heroism, also gave birth to martyrdom for the faith. "Because during the tragic outcome of the uprising, many of our ancestors were given a choice - the turban or the gallows. And they chose what they considered most precious - their Orthodox faith and their immortal souls, which remained faithful to the Lord," Patriarch Daniil said.
He also said that on this day, the Church honours the heroes of the April Uprising, "just as it has always honoured all its sons and daughters, offering a prayer at every service and every liturgy for the repose of all those who fell for the faith and for the freedom of the homeland."
He noted that, to a large extent, the self-sacrifice of these innocent sufferers led to their cry rising not only to European and global public opinion, to the governments of the great powers of that time, but also before God's throne, to incline God's mercy toward all.
"May the Lord, through the prayers of the holy martyrs of the April Uprising, help us to uphold our Orthodox faith, which teaches us valour, honesty, courage, and sacrificial love for our neighbours. This is the guarantee of Bulgaria’s survival; may God protect Bulgaria," said the Bulgarian Patriarch in his blessing.
