Vazrazhdane proposes that a public register of child sex offenders is set up, MP Kliment Shopov of Vazrazhdane told journalists in Parliament on Thursday. It is high time Bulgarian parents had access to this information in order to protect their children from people with such tendencies, he added.

“On Wednesday, we submitted amendments to the Child Protection Act, proposing that part of the data in the National Child Sex Offender Register, which is currently accessible only to certain institutions, be made public. This would include full name, date of birth, address, type of crime, and sentence,” Shopov said.

These changes are absolutely necessary, as in recent years we have observed an increase in cases of child sex offences in the country, he said. According to him, from 2023 to 2024 there has been a 58% increase.

In response to a question about how Vazrazhdane will vote on the president’s veto of the Election Code amendments, MP Tsveta Rangelova said that the party will support the proposed changes and will vote against the veto.

“Whether we will override it depends on whether BSP – United Left reconsider their position, as signals to that effect are given by the new leadership,” she added.
